The dropped stitch

By Bodkin

.... but not on 2nd January

We arrived in Lerwick too early for our first visit of the day, so decided to go for a coffee.

An hour later and with a heavy heart it becomes plain that this is a completely unrealistic expectation. Nowhere, from small coffee shops to large hotels, is open! Hopes are raised at each new suggestion, only to be dashed like the waves on the rocks outside Tesco, as yet another door is locked and shutters closed.

At 12 noon, alongside several other, now familiar, refreshment seekers, we find Mareel has opened. Star wars fans are arriving to watch a film, and THE CAFE IS OPEN!!

Now in full 'grumpy old woman' mode, I sank further into despair at the state of the floor. Clearly unwashed after the new year's eve celebrations, my feet stuck to it with every step, making a loud 'sticky floor' sound.

Things could only get better, and they did! 2 visits to friends, and at the second house, a kitchen table laden with food. No one can remain in low spirits faced with freshly baked walnut scones, served with cream and apricot jam.
