Ruthven Barracks

A better day, some good sunny spells, the odd shower and a bitter cold wind.

Ended up having a few drams last night, so it was a quiet morning in the chalet.  We headed out for a run in the car after lunch.  First stop was at the old barracks, and then on to Newtonmore.  We headed on to the Pattack falls and nature trail.  Back to Aviemore, and had a walk around the town.  A quiet evening in with the telly.

Ruthven Barracks are the best preserved of the four barracks built in 1719, after the 1715 Jacobite rising.  The stonework probably comes from the former castle, built around 1200s.  The complex comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure, each with two rooms per floor. There was 10 men in each room, cooking over the fires. The barracks and enclosing walls were built with loopholes for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners. Destroyed by Jacobites following their retreat after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.  Taken near Ruthven, Badenoch.
