Bedford

More than twenty years ago, I spent a night at Malmaison in Glasgow. When I went into the room, there was a bottle of wine on the side. That, I thought, is genius: a four pound bottle of wine, a fraction of the room cost, and now why would I stay anywhere else?

Except it wasn't complimentary; there was a sign around the neck of the bottle saying I'd be charged twelve pounds if I opened it. I've never stayed in a Malmaison since.

Tonight I had a similar experience at a hotel in Bedford where we were staying: an £8.50 bottle of wine - I Googled the price - for £24, if we opened it. There was a Tesco Express five minutes walk away, so I got us a bottle of Prosecco and a bottle of Rioja from there instead for a total of £15. These people people haven't thought it through!

The hotel restaurant, though, was excellent. As was everything else, actually. But this whole 'bottle of wine in your room' concept is a nonsense.
