The Winner Takes it All
Well that was quite an election night. I stayed up until 1am watching the results, then listened to it on the radio when I woke up at 6am. A clear mandate has been given to the Conservatives to deliver Brexit, Boris acknowledging that he's been 'lent' Labour votes to do this. We can now move forward and the stalemate in parliament is over. Jeremy Corbyn will be stepping down as Labour leader, which I am happy about given his inadequate and untimely action to deal with antisemitism. Unfortunately the strength of the SNP in Scotland means that another independence referendum might be on the cards.
H and I went for a long walk at Felbrigg this morning to blow away the cobwebs. These two willow animals were standing in front of the hall and it looks like they're lit up at night. I would love the hare in my garden!!!
Statistics
Some interesting statistics in the results caused by the first past the post system. The Conservative vote share was only up 1.2% but they got nearly 15% more seats. The Lib Dems vote share was up by 4.2%, but they lost 8% of their seats and their leader too. They also got three times as many votes as the SNP, but less than a quarter of the number of SNP seats. If based totally on vote share, the Conservatives would have got 82 less seats and the Lib Dems would have got 64 more seats. Our system really does mean that the winner takes it all.
