Making Bacon

The first shards of my first homemade bacon. Delicious... if a little salty for my taste! The bacon we buy here is very thin and insubstantial, and usually smoked. Hence the venture into making our own. I'll get there in the end.

This morning we nearly hired a truck, until we realised it was too small, so we went for the eye-wateringly expensive delivery from our local builders merchant instead (in Scotland delivery was usually free for building supplies). Mr B is going to make us some new floors/ceilings, to liberate the corner of our house that we currently can't use. His investigations of the dodgy beams have resulted in our being able to do the whole job in an easier way than we first thought (putting beams alongside the old dodgy beam to give it a hand, rather than replacing it).

Anyway, all that was purchased, then home for painting (Mr B) and sewing (me). The afternoon was about foraging for preserve ingredients. Happily the newish organic supermarket had the marmalade oranges I needed, and a bunch of bergamot lemons too - which I'd never even heard of. They smell great and, apparently, make a fantastic lemon tart.

Freezing cold today, with snow forecast later in the week. It will probably come to nothing, but that didn't stop me joining the wide-eyed hordes panic-buying heating paraffin. At least we'll be fine for breakfast foods if we get snowed in.
