What struck my fancy

A swan

cruising along near Welney (UK). I had taken grandson and his two friends who had stayed overnight to see something different, namely a stretch of road that floods after heavy rain, his two friends had not seen this before. This part of England used to be under water but was drained through the genius and drive of the Dutchman Cornelius Vermuyden in the 1600s. No mechanical diggers then, this was proper work and if you died you were buried in a muddy bank somewhere.

In essence, in this nearly totally flat region, he devised a network of channels and wind pumps to convey water from lower levels to slightly higher ones that could eventually reach the sea. Land was reclaimed and became habitable. The Dutchman was knighted for his contribution.

The extra shows a flooded section of road, people weaved around the road closed signs. If blurring number plates remember to also blur the reflection.
