Candyfloss

Small hoverfly, Melanostoma, a New Zealand native. This little hoverfly is only 5mm long. The flower is moth mullein, Verbascum virgatum, which is smaller than usual due to the drought.

About 9.30 last night a southerly front passed through. It was rather sedate for a southerly front, but the temperature fell by 9º in just a few minutes. What a relief! I'd closed the house up for the night so I opened the doors and windows for a while to let it blow through. Today was gloomy with heavy overcast sky, but it was otherwise pleasant.

However, after a week of nor'westers everything is seriously dry. We haven't had proper rain for weeks.
