Shed archaeology - pitchfork
(Backblip on 28 November)
From mid October to the end of November I have been immersed, apart from the occasional welcome outing, in all-consuming physical work: clearing things out of the shed (most of them a lot heavier than this), photographing, advertising and disposing of them and, in between times, scraping off old paint, filling holes and repainting neglected bits of the house.
Now I have a little breathing space I will share some of the finds. Here, a pitchfork. It proved very popular so it went to the person with the best use for it: someone who is trying to get 8 acres of land, untouched for many years, back to grazing. She wrote:
'During the summer a family member on his very old tractor cut some of it. We needed to move the cut grass before he could make another pass with the tractor. We tried all sorts of methods but found traditional pitchforks to be the most effective. As you can appreciate they are like gold dust and not something you can just go out and buy so we were having to use all sorts of other rakes which were far more difficult. It has been a real community effort with neighbours and family all helping but unfortunately we have been beaten by the weather and will continue when the field is drier. We are still at the start of this journey and have loads more to cut and remove and your pitchfork would be a great help.'
