Outstanding Day
The last time I was here would have been onboard HMS Fearless, moored off Greenwich in around 1975, and I never got to visit the museum or it’s grounds.
Today, led by Samantha, Clare and arrived in Greenwich in time for breakfast before arriving at the National Maritime Museum for a guided tour, just the three of us making up the party.
What a thoroughly enjoyable way and great introduction to a wonderful museum. Following the tour we had a coffee in the Great Map Room before spending another three hours going more slowly through every gallery. I loved it.
Then it was up the hill to the General Wolfe statue and the Royal Observatory, I don’t think I have been there since around 1960!!
We hadn’t finished, Greenwich Royal Park is a place Samantha loves, she took us off to the deer enclosure and Clare and I marvelled at Sam feeding a squirrel from her hand and a fully grown fox running alongside her, probably no more than a couple of feet away.
We exited the park in the rapidly approaching nightfall and headed off for Samanthas favourite coffee shop, an independent selling out of this world cakes.
Canary Wharf next stop for a look at this seriously illuminated area before heading to the ‘Breakfast Club’ for dinner. I’d promised Samantha a meal here and whilst Clare enjoyed her Mr Big Chicken Samantha and I tucked into flat iron steaks, really nice food. Sam had struck up a bit of a rapport with the waiter and left with a mug and a pocket full of pin badges.
Back to Beckton on the DLR for a slump in the hotel room chair with a coffee as Sam and I compared Fitbit data. I had covered just short of 20,000 steps, Sam more as she had walked from the campus to us and still had the walk back to go.
