Martyrs' Stone
On the edge of Wigtown. We took advantage of better weather to get outside for a change of scenery. The monument remembers the Wigtown Martyrs - Margaret Lachlan (60) and Margaret Wilson (18). They were Scottish Covenanters who were executed by Scottish Episcopalians in 1685 by tying them to stakes on the town's mudflats and allowing them to drown with the rising tide. The executors hoped that the younger woman might repent after watching the older woman drown. She didn't. [from Wikipedia]
