Thirty Years Since The Fall

It's thirty years since the Wall came down. The initial euphoria was definitely a defining point of the Eighties and a totally seismic event in Western Europe's history. Having read some excellent articles over the past couple of weeks about what happened the picture for Germans is much more nuanced. 
The East Germans, in particular, received a dizzying change to their world so quickly - an enormous loss of jobs (2.5 million in just a few years) and the loss of their whole foundation as a society (both good and bad) that they still haven't recovered from. Even now East Germans have a level of income, on average, 20% less than in the west. I was most amazed by the fact that up to a fifth of West Germans have never visited the east of their own country, even now, thirty years later.
