My Albuquerque Must-See
(Another backblip... 10 days late)
When I was researching our New Mexico trip, I came across images of a tiny chapel in Albuquerque's Old Town area that I knew at once I'd have to see in person.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe is tiny (see extra photos) -- we were fortunate that no one else was there the afternoon we visited it. It's open daily for visitors and is available for small weddings and other ceremonies.
The stunning stained glass calendar window, titled "Feast Days of the Virgin and Phases of the Moon," is "a rather complex calendar of Marian Feast Days," according to the website link above. It was created by Sister Giotto Moots, designer and builder of the chapel, and completed in 1975. She also created three other windows for the Sagrada Art Studios, an art school she established in 1969.
From the chapel's website (see link above): "The center of this window stands for the sun. Surrounding the center is a light-blue ring intended to represent the sky. A web between the two symbolizes the calendar days of a single year, and the dark-blue outermost rim containing red circles shows the order of the cycles of the moon in one calendar year." I found the window mesmerizing, and am so glad we were able to see it!
There is also a shrine in the tiny building; I've included a photo of it in the extras, as well as a photo of the exterior and a close-up photo of the window.
