Exceedingly good cakes

On our way back from Carlisle this afternoon we decided to go and see how the bridge at Pooley Bridge was getting on. It was a lovely late afternoon and we thought we would go to the teashop that is right by the river and has a good view of the bridge construction - we even managed to sit outside.

They are trying very hard at Granny Dowbekin's Tea Shop to keep trade going, despite the lack of road bridge and the building works themselves. I don't actually think they could do more - posters all over the place, direction signs, special offers. But the place itself is great anyway. Really friendly staff, efficient service, lots of seating . . . and a huge range of delicious looking cakes. The blip is the Ginger Bridge that Gordon chose - a fine image of the old bridge.

The stage they have got to with the bridge is the digging out and draining of the casements where the bridge foundations will be constructed. The photo in Extras shows this happening. It also shows the tearoom.

So, we feel we need to return to the teashop on a regular basis, just to support it in these difficult times . . . nothing to do with the exceedingly good cakes, of course.
