Lerwick waterfront
A relaxing first day in Shetland.
Highlight - freshly baked scones with jam and cream for breakfast.
Lovely to catch up with old friends. A day of coffee, good food and lots of chatting. A welcome leisurely pace after the last couple of action-packed days.
I stopped on the pier to take this photo. I remember the work going on to renovate the pale orange building: Lerwick Tollbooth, now the home of the RNLI.
It was completed in 2004. It's 400 odd years old, and was in a poor state. Have read today of the way the renovation was done. The outer shell of the building was retained and restored. The roof was removed and a steel frame was craned in to support a complete rebuild of the inside. It looked a bit too 'new' at first, but it has weathered in now.
The project was awarded the Federation of Master Builders 'Builder of the Year' competition for 2005.
