La Danzón

A tradition imported from Cuba, the danzón is a stately dance with syncopation. Every Wed. evening at the zócalo, there is a special small orchestra, and people gather to dance and watch the dancers. It's all free and anyone can participate. Many people were finely dressed up, though footwear ranged from tennis shoes to spike heels.

When the dance started, the dancers had solemn expressions on their faces, but as the tempo increased the smiles broke out! (although it never was really very fast).
