Rotterdam.....

A time change overnight and we are now an hour ahead of BST.

Our first port of call on this adventure. 

In rain and a strong wind, we walked across the bridge from the port into the city centre. Our route opened up into a huge market square surrounded by a feast of new and old architecture. 

These cubic houses have to be my choice of Blip today. I climbed the very steep and narrow staircase to one of the houses, open for viewing. Space was surprising inside, the walls being at an angle and all storage space so well used.

The name Rotterdam was first mentioned in 1283, when a small tract of reclaimed land was created by draining the mouth of the River Rotte (a distributary in  the River Rhine delta.) It is a major European port and the second largest city of the Netherlands. It lies about 19 miles from the North Sea, to which it is linked by a canal called the New Waterway. It has a nickname as the "Gateway to Europe". 

We walked back to the port along the River Meuse passing lots of history on our way.
