After a post wedding lunch we visited some friends who live close to the River Churn here. It is a delightful little clear river which many reckon is really the source of the Thames. It rises at Seven Springs where there is an inscription in latin implying that it is the Thames. Personally I feel that it should be as there is always water flowing from the rocks whereas sometimes it's hard to locate the Thames at Thameshead. Frequently no water appears from the muddy spring until several hundred metres further down the field and only once have I seen it emerge from the spring. The Churn also starts 24 miles further from the mouth of the Thames than the Thames does at Thameshead.
