SWF.....
....I knew that our former London City office was somewhere in the canyons of the east central area, but I couldn't have told you where. Rat-running for a train through the narrow passageways of Cornhill, I turned the wrong way and bumped into the back door of our former office. I never visited the office in the old days before most of their admin work was centralised to Edinburgh (an early form of offshoring), the remaining sales staff were re-housed somewhere less grand, and the building sold. It felt like bumping into an old friend.
I do remember one office story from London about a guy who worked there for 10 years; I think his name was Willie Tait. He never spoke much and certainly never talked about about his war service, but on his leaving day, the office manager let slip that Willie had been a pilot with the final bomber raid that sank the German battleship 'Tripitz' and was a Dambuster with 617 Sqn too. Some people spend their careers in an office, some people don't.
