Raising the roof.

While waiting for the pasties to come out of the oven at McFaddens butchers in St Just, we had a wander round the town.
Scaffolding was being erected round the church, but I noticed the door was open and so we decided to take a look.
The inside was quite dark,but the first thing we noticed was the floor looked wet.
In the corner was a small display which mentioned the fund raising to provided the desperately needed new roof.
The original church was earlier than 1200, but the present building is 15th century .
Originally they needed to raise £85,800 in match funding funding to unlock £226,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
However, the estimates were way out, and and the amount increased to £ 170,000.
Remarkably they have nearly reached their target, and the Lottery Grant has been given and work has started.
The whole of the church’s six sided roof is being repaired at one go.
6 slopes, and 15,000 slates.
It will be interesting to see finished next time we come to Cornwall.

Pasties as usual were soooooo tasty. We think the best in Cornwall.
Ate them sat overlooking Botallack cliffs.
Then a walk to see the Crown mines.
VERY breezy. Didn’t venture down this time.

Had a look round the fabulous Kurt Jackson Gallery.
Exhibition of his contemporary paintings of Frenchman’s Creek. They were stunning.
My funds only ran to a postcard!

On to Sennen Cove. Surprised the carpark only cost £1 for two hours. ( see extra)
A walk round in sun and rain, and it certainly blew the cobwebs away.
Over to the Minack Theatre where we were going to have a cuppa.
Forgot you have to pay £5 each to go into the cafe too. So took a few photos of Porthcurno.

Decided to drive down and have a look at Lamorna Cove, and had tea in the cafe. ( Also slice of apple pie and Cornish cream for me!)

We heard two ladies sat behind us ( both German)asking the waitress about busses.
She told them to walk up to the main road (about a mile) said she didn’t know bus times, and they were too late to order food, and the cafe was closing in 5 mins. ( just after 3pm)
Could believe how offhand she was.
We both knew there probably wasn’t a bus, so enquired where they were going.
They had walked the coast path to Lamorna from Penzance, and were hoping to catch a bus back.
So MrC and I both had the same idea, and suggested we give them a lift.
They were so grateful. A lovely couple of ladies. One had worked in London for 15 years, and the other was a friend over from Cologne.
Just down in Cornwall for a few days holiday.

We felt we were just repaying kindnesses done to us when we have been on holiday in Europe.

Tea has been a delightful crab salad.
The crab bought fresh this morning from the “ Real Cornish Crab Company “ at Long Rock.
All meat handpicked. We asked for both brown and white meat, but it seems most people prefer only the white. I think you need both to get the best taste.

Another enjoyable day, even if the weather was not wall to wall sunshine.
