The Devil & the Speckled Wood
Another wild wet and seriously blowy day, but much has been achieved indoors. Himself donned his waterproofs and went out in Captain Oates fashion at around 3pm but by the time he came back there was a glimmer of sunshine. I thought about swimming, He said I'd be mad for it was hard enough standing up by the sea let alone getting in it. I went to investigate (in the car). He was quite correct. I went for a yomp around the circuit then and coming home towards the west it was wild but.....Kitchen Cove was rather nicely sheltered and the sun was out. Yes, dear reader, it had to be done and actually it was rather nice.
This little chap was making the most of the sunshine and I liked the Autumnal tinge to the blackberry leaves he was basking on. Talking of blackberries - make sure you eat and gather all by St Michael's Day - 29th September - for it was once believed that the Devil spat on blackberries on this day or did something worse! As you will recall, St Michael fought ferociously with the Devil and cast from him Heaven. He landed on a blackberry bush and it was so painful he comes back every year to spit on blackberries and breathe his foul breath all over them. So now you know.
