The Modern Kilt

Smailholm Group received our Border Reivers panel last June, and it's well on the way to being complete. Being one of the larger groups, with 12 members, some of us have sewn only quite small areas and many of us have completed our contributions, so we're very pleased to be able to counteract our withdrawal symptoms by helping with the Modern Kilt panel. We don't have time to spare, so Fiona Brown has made a fabulous start with this beautiful kilt. We're reassured to know that in the early days of the modern kilt there were no formal tartans, so we can just make them up without fear of any clan chiefs taking offence.

Our man is working in Invergarry Ironworks, where the (English) owner, Thomas Rawlinson, is credited by some with inventing the kilt we know today, a more practical working garment than its predecessor, the belted plaid.
