The Tombolo and Geese
We were so blessed the last 11 days with the weather at our lovely place in the Gulf Islands. It could have been storms and snow and power outages, but we had calm and not that cold and 5 good boat outings... All much appreciated as we also had visitors... Got off the ferry tonight on the way home to a deluge of rain (also lucky it wasn't colder or it would have been a blizzard) which only abated as we neared Seattle. Nasty driving n the dark. Always good to be home. But it looks like Christmas here. (will take care of that tomorrow.)
This morning H and I and our friends took a walk .. This is the other side of the TUMBOLO (I love this word!) at the end of our bay. The dock you see is across from our dock. We disturbed a flock of Canada Geese and I couldn't get the camera hanging around my neck up faster to frame it better. Tumbolo is from the Italian word, tumbolo (there's also an Italian town named Tombolo)..it means "mound" and is sometimes translated as the old Norse "eyrr" meaning gravel beach. Probably caused by wave action on both sides sweeping gravel to a mound... It's like an isthmus connecting an island to the mainland, or in our case, an island to another island. On the left out of the picture is the main island where we are, on the right you can see a smaller one. That's Galiano Island in the background. In the winter it's very wet and we had to traverse it up high to not be ankle deep in water. The geese were all in a wet "pond" that we didn't notice til we heard them. It was grey and overcast but oh it smells like the sea and fresh fresh air, and no one was around (except some workers working on the B. C. Hydro poles we went to check out on the small island) and we came back through the green green forest to get ready to leave. Now it's back to the city til sometime next month... all good!!
