Precarious balance

When I walk around the Sierra mountains in California, there are loads of large rocks of all shapes and sizes. Every once in a while I come across one that seems to be balanced and sometimes in precarious positions. My understanding is that these mountains were carved out by glaciers eons ago, but I find it a wonder that a rock will be left behind like this one.
