Loved-Up
I’m a huge fan of poet, novelist and all-round good egg, Jackie Kay – the Scottish Makar (Poet Laureate). She’s even appeared in this journal… www.blipfoto.com/entry/3699324
Now, her memoir ‘Red Dust Road’, about her search for her ‘born-again’ Nigerian birth father and her Mormon birth mother from the Scottish Highlands – both of them very different from her fabulous adoptive Glaswegian Communist parents – has been adapted into a play by Tanika Gupta. It’s currently on at Home in Manchester https://homemcr.org/media/red-dust-road-trailer so it was an ideal opportunity for a book club day-out!
A group of 16 of us - most of whom had read and loved Kay’s book - thoroughly enjoyed the production (a few tears were shed!) and then went out for drinks at The Molly House and TriBeCa in the Gay Village.
Here are the lovely Helen and Hannah, without whom the trip would never have got off the ground. Thanks to them both!
Today’s tune is my ear-worm of the week, ‘Salted Caramel Ice Cream’ by Metronomy... https://youtube.com/watch?v=cBRDaPWaxZg
