The Uig Chessmen

This carved wooden 'King@ chesspiece was placed above Uig sands to commemorate the finding of the walrus ivory chessmen in a sand dune back in the 1800s    Thought to be 12th century, but it's not really known although there are several theories locally. I find it sad that the majority of pieces (82 I think) are in the British Museum whilst just 12 remained in Scotland and are in Edinburgh
After doing the tourist thing here we walked over the Machair down to Uig sands. O M G !!!  Never seen anything like it, so vast and open; golden sands going on forever with the turquoise ocean and rollers of the Atlantic. Mind blowing
