Rievaulx Abbey from above.
Today started on a high note with a text from our granddaughter to let us know she had passed her A levels, 2 A’s and a C, and will now be going to Sheffield University to study Law. Well done Jenny we are so very proud of you.
What a perfect day for our walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx.
A 7/8 mile circular walk, done the opposite way round, so we could walk down the hill from Rievaulx Terrace, down to the village, instead of up.
Still a tricky path through the woods.
We did a detour to the National Trust Rievaulx Terrace, where we visited the Ionic Temple.
This was built in the 1750’s. ( see extra )
The Duncombe family and guests would dine and socialise here after promenading along the Terrace.
The ceiling frescoes were painted by the Italian painter Giuseppe Maltia Borgnis.
For us, however, the best part were the views of the Abbey below, which we glimpsed through the trees. Truly stunning.
Lunch as usual in the cafe, and today we had the Yorkshire Platter ( see extra ) sat outside overlooking the Abbey.
Now back relaxing, sat with a nice glass of white wine, overlooking the river.
Really getting used to this!
