I estimate that about 80% of the oats in this field have been flattened with the recent heavy rain and winds.  (Extra) On Monday it was not as bad although large areas were still completely flat, yet the adjoining field of wheat is hardly affected.  With the forecast for more thunderstorms and gales over the next couple of days I wonder if any oats will still be standing and how easy it will be to harvest.
On some ragwort beside the field there were several kinds of hoverflies most of which had the usual yellow and black markings.  One looked a bit like a kind of bee and I am uncertain if it is a Large Pied Hoverfly (Volucella pellucens) or a Blotch-winged Hoverfly (Leucozona lucorum) which is fairly similar but smaller.  Perhaps someone can identify it.
