HORNET HOVERFLY

Volucella zonaria. A pair of these spend a lot of time visiting this hebe. They're completely harmless despite looking quite huge and fearsome (bigger than most bumble bees), and they look as though they've been beautifully painted and then varnished.

We're going home tomorrow although I'll be back here next week for Mum's 91st birthday.
