In our family, we exchange presents at New Year instead of Christmas. So yesterday D gave me a lovely New pair of binoculars and this afternoon, I set out to try them. I headed over to Newtonairds wood and had a great walk up the hill, meeting not a soul. Not a lot of birds, either, apart from a few screeching jays. I did spot a little female deer, though.

Although we are nearly two weeks on from the winter solstice, mornings are not getting any lighter, but we are getting a few extra minutes of daylight at the end of the afternoons.

Here is the sky at 4.15, just before it gets dark. I hope to be able to look at the moon through my binoculars later on.
