11 Boroughgate

Boroughgate is the wide central street of Appleby, planned in the past to accommodate markets, as Appleby was once the main market centre for the area. This is Number 11 and has always intrigued me, as it is so different from the others. For as long as anyone can remember it has been a chemist, it was Eden Pharmacy and is now Boots Pharmacy.

However, as the building dates from the 16th century, it would no doubt originally have been a rather fine dwelling. The gabled upper storey, with its lovely windows, was added in the 17th century, whilst the shop windows were only put in in the 20th century. It is obvious, looking at it, that the buildings on either side were built around Number 11 showing that it predates them.

There was a lot of interest in the blip of Wreay Church that I posted yesterday.  I have tagged some previous blips to give more views of it.
