Our final Peruvian meal
We did not sleep well last night - perhaps that is what three flights in one day does to you. When we woke up in Lima it was grey and foggy, which persists all day and the fog does not dissipate. Due to the warm coastal air mixing with the cold wind off the Pacific Ocean as a consequence of the cold Humboldt current, Lima is grey and foggy for most of the year, certainly between April to December, not what one would expect for a city only 12 degrees south of the equator. It is also one of the driest cities in the world with an annual rainfall of only 11 millimetres per year. I would hate to live with this grey weather for most of the year! See the extra for the foggy view in Miraflores.
After breakfast we wandered around the Miraflores area, we did want to go see an Incan museum but it was closed as today is National Independence day here in Peru. Lima is currently hosting the Pan American Games which started 2 days ago, and much of the area was still blocked off as the marathon went through Miraflores yesterday. We did a bit of shopping, I finally found an Alpaca scarf that I liked and we bought some chocolate to take home as presents. We went for our final meal and of course it had to be Ceviche, as seen here. Raw fish, often salmon or tuna, in a tangy citrus dressing made with coriander and often a bit of chilli, and here it is served with large white corn and pieces of pumpkin (there are many types of corn here, including black corn). I have eaten ceviche in London where it is more like a thin fish carpaccio and does not have the corn or pumpkin, but this is the traditional way it is served all over Peru.
We have checked out the hotel and are about to go to the airport to fly home, a long 12.5 hour flight and with the time difference of 6 hours we only get home late tomorrow afternoon.
As Lima did not offer any good photography today I have added some extras of the beautiful animals from the Galapagos! A marine turtle, a baby sea lion, and a blue footed booby fishing.
Thank you to everyone who had followed our holiday and left lovely hearts and comments. Apologies I was not able to respond, but I really enjoyed reading all the comments. Normal service will resume once home again!
