Hello!
This morning’s walk with Elvis was interesting, exciting, reassuring and frustrating. As we moved from the cover of the woods onto the path running alongside the field, I saw something off in the distance. We approached, with Elvis off the lead. It (now clearly a roe deer) moved towards the woods. I reached for my little Nikon as the deer turned round and looked at us. The battery was flat. Lesson to self, check before going out with camera. Got my iPhone out and snapped a couple. Then, amazingly, the deer started to walk towards us. For a moment, I had forgotten that Elvis was off the lead. He, on the other hand knew. But stayed by my side, sitting patiently for instructions on what he should do next. Not having covered ‘don’t chase the deer away’ in training yet, I gently attached the lead. He didn’t run or try anything silly. Good Boy. I took this picture at the closest point on maximum iPhone zoom. Next, the deer realised that we were humans and ran off into the woods, barking a warning to the rest of the herd inside. Elvis was released from the lead and remained at my side throughout. Amazing. I do worry for the deer here though. Some of them are raised and released for the hunt, so still see humans as something not so scary. They are too trusting at this stage. Hopefully they will become more streetwise by the time the hunt starts in autumn.
