Dear Diary,

I can't tell a male mourning dove from a female but they are always in pairs.  That is, unless one of them is sitting on a nest of eggs.  Then you will see a solitary dove feeding and waiting their turn to sit on the nest.  They mate for life and if one dies they must find a new mate if they can.  If this is a dove waiting to return to the nest then he/she is storing seeds in their crop to bring back to feed to the other.  It is where the term "lovey dovey" comes from I've been told.  Anyway, good morning Molly or Malcolm!  If you want to hear their call, here's a link.
