Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Fiasco!

We spent most of the morning, after JR was back from the gym, putting up paintings. Actually, it was pretty fraught. We had left the screws for the mirror, so that was fairly easy, helped by resting it on the mantlepiece then just a wee lift up.

But the big Edinburgh painting - what a complete fiasco that was! We'd popped it up nae bother when we first moved here - it's not heavy. And so I hadn’t left the hooks in place while it was painted. Well - we measured half way on the wall and the painting, measured up from the radiator, down from the dado rail, and had to hang it and take it down FOUR times! The hooks fell out, the wall and new paintwork is wrecked, there are many many holes, fortunately now hidden. Then when we thought we'd got it right, it was STILL not quite level. Aaaargh! I wish I’d set up a time lapse movie on my phone of the farcical operation, because it was unbelievable that two fairly sensible people could make such a mess of a fairly simple task.

We had been so busy, and had just collapsed on the sofas, wondering whether we could live with a slightly squint painting (NO!) when Elizabeth arrived - we hadn’t noticed the time. Archie went crazy. They went off for a day's fun. (And more than 17,000 steps!)

JR then popped out to get flowers, but came back with two lampshades instead. They'll fit the new table lamps we scored from Hazel! I touched up a couple of tiny wee bits of white paint that the wonderful Zoltan had missed. And yes - I got some paint on my favourite trousers.

I did a few more wee tasks, but mainly watched the tennis and then the football.

A couple of gins later, much discussion about which paintings and where. JR loves the new walls so much that she doesn’t want too many paintings up...

Now to watch Andy and Serena...
