twinned with trumpton

To Falkirk; via the bike shop - I booked the bike in for a new chain ring and pedals. (Now that I've ridden the Giant again, the brakes need some serious attention as well)
From Waverley we got the 1045 to Falkirk High and 30 minutes later we were off and straight out onto the canal tow path. 2 miles later we went through the tunnel and arrived at the top of the wheel.
But first we headed to Rough Castle Roman fort - a further mile along the way. After not falling ino the pits we sat next to the Antonine Wall and scoffed a sandwich or two and then did a qiuck scoot about before going back onto the bike and back to the wheel; just in time to see it in action.
Half an hour there paddling in the water management simulation thingies and back onto the bikes along the Forth and Clyde canal; a brief detour to Lidl in Bainsford for some millionaire's shortbread and liquid refreshment, and a look at a yacht heading out to sea - Alex couldn't get his head round a description of how a lock worked but after he'd watched on, it made sense.
Onwards to the Kelpies; more crisps and sugar and then to the Helix Park.
As afternoon threatened to ease into evening, we headed back into Falkirk, Halfords for air for my back tyre and then urbex. We went in search of Firs Park, one time home of East Stirlingshire FC. We found it; and helpfully the fence around it has been breached so in we went (Alex has been watching YouTube videos of abandoned football grounds so he was thrilled with this minor diversion. A ground I never saw us lose at. Draws? A few. But mostly wins.  If I remember rightly, the last time I was there we won a championship. (I just checked; we finished runners up to Stranraer, but a 3-0 at Firs Park on 1 May 2004 saw us open up an unassailable lead over Gretna and get promoted from Division 3 on that day)
Finally a short skip through Central Retail Park and to Falkirk Grahamston.
Off the train at Haymarket and up Torphichen St to Hers for scampi and chips and mushy peas.
At 2015 we set off on the final 5 miles of the day down the Mound and home for hot showers and deep sleeps.
