Neighbour Andrew, who used to be head of philosophy at Shrewsbury School, has been saying for a long time how much he’d like to show me around the old library at school. He knew I’d find the old Bibles fascinating. We finally got chance to do that today and Andrew was the most excellent guide, excitedly showing us some of the most incredible books and bibles. I got to hold this 1534 copy of Tyndale’s ‘pocket’ New Testament and hear people much more knowledgable than me talk about it and what it’s done for the English language and the history of this country. We also saw one of King James II’s personal Bibles, one of the first translations of the Welsh Bible and of course, plenty of notes from the school’s most famous alumni, Charles Darwin. A privilege to have such a tour.

Then into a hill walk with the ladies and a pint. Perfect.
