Painted Lady

As a welcome change from Titan arum-watching we took a walk along the Esk at Musselburgh. Here the Canada geese were the main species, i counted around 50 of adults and  goslings of  differing stages of maturity. They are the most attentive of parents, watching our movements carefully as their offspring feed or guiding them away.
At the river mouth we followed the shore west a while then turned inland, passing at one point a garden whose Senecio spilled over the wall. this was popular with butterflies, a couple of rather pale and slightly tatty Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) (main picture) a very smart, possibly recently emerged Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) and, further along, resting on ivy, a Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria ) (collage in extra).

At no point did we see evidence of the heavy rainfall of yesterday although there was some impressive backflow at the weir.
