Mowbray Castle - Hackfall Wood

Hackfall Woods is a rather beautiful and tranquil steep wooded area on the banks of the River Ure a few miles north of Ripon. It was bought and landscaped by the Aislabie family in around 1731.
It is a rather special place for an afternoon walk, and even for a little 'forest bathing.'   

Mowbray Castle at Hackfall is a mock ruin thought to have been built for William Aislabie some time between 1750 and 1767. There are several other follies in the woods. Todays first extra is another folly - Fishers Hall.
The second extra shows the rather interesting fountain which has recently been restored to operation, having stopped working in the 1800s.
