Wanderings & Witterings

Cabot

22,069 steps walked, two bus journeys taken - it was a busy day on the sightseeing front, aided in no small part by weather that was considerably more clement than yesterday.

First up was a bus ride up to Clifton Downs. That gave me the opportunity to walk downhill through The Downs towards the Clifton Suspension Bridge. A stop off at the Observatory before crossing the Bridge and taking another bus back into the city centre. Once there, and after a bite to eat, I revisited some of the places we'd seen on yesterday's walking tour, this time without the heavy rain and the restrictions of a tour guide's itinerary.

Finally, I headed up to Brandon Hill and the Cabot Tower, erected in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's 'discovery' of North America, in particular his 'discovery' of a place he called the New-found-land. It was a source of some mild amusement to recall that about 50 weeks ago I visited Cabot Tower in St John's Newfoundland, built around the same time in honour of Giovanni Caboto's exploits.

A well-earned beer back at my hotel before heading out to dinner (and letting the camera have an evening off), although I did make a detour on my way back later to snap the John Cabot sculpture on the waterfront using my mobile phone (today's blip). It was from Bristol in May 1497 that Cabot sailed west in search of Asia and landed in Canada. Something tells me I'll sleep well tonight!
