Unsinkable

The Public Gardens in Halifax are a joy to walk through, especially at this time of the year. Opened in 1867 they still retain a lot of Victorian features: wide pathways, fountains, statues, a bandstand and a pond or two, as well as well-tended flowers beds and beautiful tree-lined avenues. The large pond, though, contains an unusual feature: a model of the RMS Titanic.

Halifax has a rather grim association with the vessel. As the nearest ice-free port when the ship went down, it was from Halifax that many of the would-be rescue ships sailed and it was to Halifax that many of the bodies were initially returned. Indeed, many of those are buried in the city's cemeteries. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in the city has a large section devoted to the ship, with many recovered artefacts on display.
