Well Dressing
We went into the Peak District today without much of a plan and landed up walking around the Well Dressings in Tissington village.
The custom of well dressing in Derbyshire dates back at least to Celtic times. The earliest recorded well dressing in Derbyshire was at Tissington, in 1349. Modern well dressing takes place in most Derbyshire towns and villages. The villages will take turns to display over weekends from May through to September. Each dressing is a real cooperative effort by community groups. Most local schools keep the tradition alive by teaching children to make their own well dressings. The dressings are multi-material mosaic made from only natural materials such as flowers, and seeds. The subject matter may be anything but generally contain a religious message as they are now a way of giving thanks to God for water.
Jimi Hendrix was my favourite well dressing.
In extra I show Tissington Hall which stands proudly in the centre of the village.
Last extra, I called in to check the status of the peregrine young as they look like fledging any day
