Winter Surfing in P.E.
Travel Diary:
The township tour was ok. We first went to Port Elizabeth and had a quick look at some of the old buildings, monuments and history.
After this we drove to the township area. Unfortunately it was raining and the guide didn't seem too keen to actually walk around in it. I assumed, that being English, we were very used to a mild drizzle. We drove around and eventually stopped at a shebaan (tavern) for a drink. It seemed more of a formality, being apart of the tour description. After downing my cider we took a very short walk through our guides home neighbourhood of New Brighton and then back in the bus for Port Elizabeth.
After getting back, the weathet was starting to clear and we decided to check out the seafront area of P.E. it's a city that's a long way from being a tourist trap and walking along the sea front the empty beaches with their rolling waves were always with a backdrop of the industrial area to the east. We eventually made it to the boardwalk area with a short pier and a shopping complex. After some food (and watching the employees at a brand new Steer figure out how to build and bacon and cheese burger) we decided that the local casino might be a nice detour, I've never been in one before so why not!? Courtney and I gave ourselves 50 rand each to see who could win the most/ lose the least. After about 20 minutes I was down to R20 and Courtney, in about two moves (on a mistaken roulette gamble and a "penguin machine") had doubled her money. After I lost the last of my money on a purple machine called 'maltese fortune' we left, Courtney having gained about R30.
