Young Fantail (Piwakawaka)

This is no where near my best photo of the day so far but it IS a baby fantail/piwakawaka. You can see by the shape of his mouth that he is still very young - that and the fact that he didn't have the sense to get out of range of my camera.

Fantails are sods to photograph because they rarely stop moving. When I saw this wee chap last week he was still missing his back feathers, but here he is with a full set. they grow so rapidly! But continue to squawk at Mum for food long past when they can actually catch the bugs for themselves.

I have put a far better photo, one that shows the heat of the day, into my blipfolio. This is what the local kids do on Christmas Eve.
