La vida de Annie

By Annie

Sheffield cathedral.

#1GD didn't quite get the idea of the purpose of votive candles at first (if even now), her experience of 5 years of life encompassing birthday cakes rather than churches. We tried to explain about offering up prayers but she translated that as wishes, and dutifully started to think deeply then blow out the candles, these of course representing many other prayers than ours. Watched by a stern custodian in robes I tried to relight those extinguished, but just managed to spill melted wax everywhere and to burn my finger. The cathedral's a beautiful ancient building, but spotting many other tempting clusters of candles and being out of £1 coins, we moved on. The lunch in John Lewis and the ride on the big wheel proved more attractive anyway.
