Saltire Trail Race

On a bluebird day with a fresh easterly breeze, I headed to the fine wee village of Athelstaneford (birthplace of Scotland's national flag) to run in the inaugural 10k race. It was being held as part of the village's summer fair to raise funds to refurbish the village hall.

Here is the start of the kids' 2k race, launched by toot of the steam-roller whistle positioned at the start. The kids were so eager to get off.

Five minutes after the 5k set-off, the 10k followed. I managed to quickly find myself in 4th position after a km or so, but slipped to 5th over the finish line. The route followed the edges of fields for the most part, with a trickier section over Kilduff Hill through some man-eating gorse bushes.

A brilliant race though, on a stunning day. I hope they raised sufficient funds, and organise another run.
