Tongland Power Station
Today's the day …………………….. for early-modernist architecture
It looks too pretty to be a power station - but this is indeed the largest of the Galloway hydro scheme’s electricity generation plants.
The turbine house was built in the 1930s and is an excellent example of early-modernist architecture applied to an industrial setting. And when it was built, someone had the foresight to plant lots of cherry and apple trees around it that are covered in blossom just now. Apparently, lots of the original features - such as the old control system - are still there. And not so long ago it was possible to see around inside on one of the conducted tours that Scottish Power used to run.
At the beginning of 2019, Scottish Power was taken over by Drax, who are now the operators at Tongland. It would be good if they decide to re-instate the tours ………………………..
