My young prince
Lord, I do envy him.
This evening, at the school jazz night - my favourite evening in the school calendar (just pipping the Christmas service) - Dan played mostly electric and double bass, with a bit of electric guitar thrown in.
At one point, he performed a couple of songs with a friend of his, just the two of them, her singing and him playing, the first track on guitar, the second accompanying, beautifully, on the piano. It'd be lazy to say I admire his talent; what I really envy is his ability to practise. These effortless performances are the dividend of endless hours of rehearsal.
But, of course, he wasn't the only talented and hard working young person playing, this evening, and my envy wasn't limited to Dan; there was, in particular, the young woman playing sax, the guy on the drums, and the whole of the trumpet section. Right now, in their lives, they have something extraordinarily precious. The least I can do is try and capture some of it in the occasion photograph and a few words. But I wish I was up there with them. Or had been.
