Basque Sheepherders

"The monument was created by Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea and depicts a Basque sheepherder carrying a lamb beneath a moon. The monument was designed to represent the sheepherder and his descendants in the American West, as well as all Basques throughout the world."

When people think of the culture of the West Coast, Basque Sheepherders probably don't come to mind. However, there is enough of a population to be recognized and remembered by this monument as well as have a Center for Basque Studies at the University in Reno.
