SOUTH ISLAND PIED OYSTERCATCHER (Haematopus ostral

Found throughout the world but in NZ only breed in the South Island.
The interesting thing about these birds is they stab their food and twist their bills to open the molluscs. This picture illustrates this feeding characteristic.  A nice clean eye shot highlights this beauty.
