St Martin's Cathedral, Lucca
We woke to grey skies and rain, which got heavier as the morning went on, but it didn't stop us strolling through the narrow streets to the cathedral here, where we observed part of the morning service. The interior is as ornate as the facade here, with a beautifully decorated ceiling on which the colours are still vivid, despite building having commenced in 1063.
Afterwards, we explored the streets and piazzas for a while then, after a coffee stop, the rain had eased enough to walk around the top of the old city walls, the fortifications dating back to medieval times. They are wide enough for a car to drive round but are restricted to pedestrians and cyclists. They give great views in on the town and out to the surrounding hills.
Halfway round we stopped in a small osteria for frittata and the best focaccia we've ever tasted.
Not long after we set off again we spent a few minutes watching a heron being pestered by a crow who didn't seem to like him his patch (see extra).
The rain set in again mid afternoon but we finished the four kilometre circuit of the walls before heading back to our boudoir(see yesterday) where I spent some time following the very xciting afternoon session of The Masters. Hats off to Tiger!
Just got back from an excellent pizza and bottle of house white in another very friendly little restaurant. Might need to do a few more circuits of the walls!
